New Posts Okinawa

The people in Okinawa have the longest lifespans in the world. This is attributed to fair weather, healthy food and a lust for life, as clearly comprehensible by this lovely city.
Churaumi Aquarium, Japan's best indoor aquarium is here, with great whale sharks and whatnot. As is the pottery streets, the amusement park Ocean Park and Okinawa World, a theme park with enormous cave systems. Though perhaps standing out the most is America Village, a large entertainment complex with it's enormous Ferris Wheel, and many foreigners living around.

New Posts Yakushima

Yakushima is a subtropical island off the southern coast of Kyushu. It is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of Japan's oldest living trees. It was, after all, the inspiration for Princess Mononoke. It takes 2-3 hours by boat to get to the island, but the payoff is way worth it - the impressive forests of the island have boardwalk trail through the miles and miles, through waterfalls and roots and beaches.
As a subtropical island with nearly 2000 meter/1.2 mile high mountains, Yakushima attracts a lot of rainfall around the year, with a local saying claiming that it rains "35 days a month". While that may be an exaggeration, there is some rain almost on a daily basis, especially in the mountainous interior, although the rain can also be light and limited to short periods of time.

New Posts Kirishima

Kirishima is an active volcanic mountain range, made up of mountains, highlands, volcanic lakes and hot springs. Due to a eruption by Mount Shinmoedake the old hiking trails had to close, but after the ashes had cooled, Kirishima came to be Japan's first official storm riding racing track, offering various long courses around the mountains, with plenty of hurdles like tunnels and gaps to cross, all camera-supervised and broadcasted to the audience at the finish line. And if you're feeling brave, in a crater from an old volcano, there's a fighting pit for cubes as well, full of rocks to hide behind or if you're unlucky, fall over.

New Posts Horizon

In the middle of Satsuma Peninsula, the almost most southern point of the whole Japan lays Chiran, a small town, and inside that Chiran Samurai District, an almost perfectly conserved samurai village street. The street itself is very attractive, with the rock walls and hedges of residences and the forested hillsides in the distance. And at the end of it, an enormous temple-like building, newly built, but made to outward reassemble the era of the samurai houses. This is Horizon Institute of Technology.
The inside is a stark contrast to the exterior - white walls, and white flowerpots overflowing with plants almost everywhere, without disturbing the sense of cleanness and order. You will be greeted by a secretary that can take you wherever you'd want to - the many labs, classrooms and offices, or the big aula, where science talks are held just as often as kabuki theatre.

New Posts Lab

Sponsored by Horizon Institute of Technology™, Satsuma Peninsula Research Laboratory is a free-for-all science lab for aspiring tuners. You only need to present how your research can further the Storm Riding technology, and you'll be granted a desk and equipment for your research.
The building itself is a quite charming clay building, not far from Satsuma Peninsula's botanical garden and Cape Nagasakibana with it's lighthouse.

New Posts Southern Championship - Iwashima

There's a city called Iwashima in the middle of Japan. This is not that Iwashima. This Iwashima is hardly more than a big rock, with other slightly bigger rocks on top of it, in the middle of the ocean, 20 minutes by row boat from the Satsuma Peninsula. The Cube championship is a grime affair; you borrow a boat from Horizon, a supervisor follows you out to Iwashima, not to watch the match, just in case neither fighter is able to make it out in a state where they can row back. On the middle of Iwashima, there's a enormous perfect metal sphere, 5 meter/16.5 feet in diameter, with only a slight cavity that works as a handle to open it. Both enter, no one exits until one of them are either unconscious or surrenders.
