New Posts Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and Japan's fifth largest city. Sapporo is also one of the nation's youngest major cities. In 1857, the city's population stood at just seven people. Today, the city is well known for its ramen, beer, and the annual snow festival held in February. In the middle the famous clockwork chimes over the city, not far from there is Nijo market, where both locals and tourists visit to shop for fresh local produce and seafood such as crabs, salmon eggs, sea urchin and various fresh and prepared fish. And in case you'd visit for a date, don't forget Shiroi Koibito Park, White Lover's Park, where you and your significant other can eat their famous white chocolate cookies together.

New Posts Ice Bar

No, it's not one of those bars completely made of ice. Much of the interior is, however, ice chairs with thick sheep pelts on them, an ice bardisk quite dangerous to hang over for a longer time, and ice cocktails with, okay, plastic straws to drink from. Needless to say, it's very cold in here, but especially among tourists the bar is still quite popular. Rumour has it about an upstairs, members-only bar as well, but who knows?

New Posts Daisetsuzan National Park

Here's where the leaves first turn red in the autumn; the headmost snow falls, and the bears residing here goes into hibernation the earliest. It's distinctly north, isolated and enormous. It also has Japan's longest racing track for AT riders; 32 km/20 miles of all kinds of terrains, from swamp to forest to mountains and even a bit where you have to cross the sea on floating logs - and of course, the bear nest.

New Posts Hell Valley

Noboribetsu Onsen is perhaps Japan's most famous hot spring resort, to rest up tired limps. But the water runs from above, down from the fittingly named Jigokudani, Hell Valley. It's a spectacularly beautiful place, a rich valley of lush nature surrounding the ever-streaming Oyunuma Pond, a small lake with a temperature around 50°C/122°F. Volcanic activity runs just under the surface, and even the rivers are near-boiling, hot steam vents, sulfurous streams and smaller areas devoid of vegetation, nothing but frying hot rocks.

New Posts Echelon HQ

A bit outside Sapporo they are, six oddly-shaped barracks. "The Wolf's Nest", it's been called, and not without reason - the last of the Japanese wolves are sometimes sighted around the training grounds behind the HQ, and while they're harmless to humans, they certainly can give people quite the scare.
The security is, of course, impeccable, from the fingerprint and voice identification needed to enter, the body scans and the unbreakable windows. Not to talk about, the insides of the building is like a maze, new recruits are known to frequently get lost. What you can see is actually just the top of the iceberg, see, the HQ was built over an old storage of radioactive waste, that's since been emptied and cleaned out. There's underground tunnels and dungeons enough to hide half a village.

New Posts North Championship - Mt. Asahi-Dake

Peaking at 3 km/1.9 mi of both steep and flat mountainside, where ATs can get caught in loose stones or slide straight down from the wet mosses, it's quite the task to catch the ballon for winning the northern championship. The conditions have to be right too - the wind has to come up north for the balloon to go the right direction, and preferably, it should snow. This isn't purely to make it harder to see the balloon, no, Asahi-dake is known to spew steam activity in the form of fumaroles from cracks at random intervals, and the heat can cause immediate burns, that snow might help cool until the match is over.
